Abstract

It is thought that most cases of severe asthenospermia are caused by flagellar abnormalities such as immotile cilia syndrome and dysplasia of the fibrous sheath. Based on the potential for these conditions to affect centriolar integrity, we hypothesized that sperm from these patients might deliver substandard fertilization rates with ICSI. In this study of men with severely low ejaculated sperm motility, a population likely enriched in flagellar defects, we compared ICSI fertilization rates to a contemporary cohort of men with higher ejaculated sperm motility.
