Abstract

In current materials science, entropy is the only parameter allowing the evaluation of matter and energy transformations occurring in all material objects and processes. The proof of entropy being dimensionless allows justifying its application in various areas of knowledge, which are far removed from thermodynamics. All natural objects—gas, liquid solution, various mixtures, and even living cells—are characterized by an entropy value. Therefore, transformation and development occur with increasing complexity. From the standpoint of entropy, we can distinguish three levels of complexity: physical nonliving nature, biological living nature, and human civilization. These complications cover all aspects of the development of the Universe. The analysis of these complications is presented in this chapter using the parameter of entropy.
