Abstract

Cytoskeletal organization during fertilization is similar in bovine and humans in that they both require the participation of a paternally derived centriole. After sperm penetration, the zygotic centrosome organizes a microtubule array that is responsible for bringing the parental genomes together prior to first mitosis. For this purpose, the sperm-borne proximal centriole must be released from the surrounding dense structures of the sperm tail-connecting piece. The proteasomal machinery has been shown to take part in multiple steps of fertilization in different species.
