Abstract

AbstractIn frontlights for reflective LCDs made from micro‐optically structured lightguides, unwanted shadows appear in certain viewing directions. It is shown that these shadows are wider than predicted from geometrical ray optics, and that they can not be eliminated by decreasing the micro‐optical structure size. These experimental observations can be explained accurately by taking Fresnel diffraction into account.
