Abstract

in which each instrumental response was reinforced with the drug CS in the absence of cocaine. One group received a systemic injection of the NMDA receptor antagonist MK-801 in conjunction with memory reactivation, another received the beta-adrenergic receptor antagonist propranolol, and control groups received saline. At subsequent test, in which instrumental responding was reinforced with the CS alone, the MK-801-treated group showed a reduction in drug-seeking responses compared to the saline control group. The responding of the MK801-treated group was equivalent to the responding of another control group, for which the CS was omitted at test. By contrast, injections of propranolol in conjunction with memory reactivation did not reduce instrumental responding at subsequent test.
