Abstract

After screening over 20 chinese herbs using the alkaline phosphate assay of Littlefield et al (1990), extracts of Prunella vulgaris (Self Heal) was found to be highly and reproducible anti-estrogenic. This was confirmed using an estrogen-response element luciferase assay in T47D cells, proliferation assays, and assessment of Cyr61 expression in ECC1 cells by western blot. Based on this our objective was to test whether this herb might be useful for the treatment of endometriosis using a human xenograft mouse model.
