Abstract

The use of gastric acid suppression medications during oncologic surgery has become a mainstay within the perioperative period. Recent literature suggests that the use of these medications may be associated with significant adverse effects, including an increase in post-operative infections. However, surgical oncology patients have never been particularly studied and the impact of acid suppression in this cohort is generally unknown. We intended to compare the rates of postoperative morbidity including various types of infections and organ dysfunction in cancer patients who take acid-suppressing medications versus those who are not taking said medications during their surgical course.
