Abstract

This chapter will discuss how libraries can communicate directly with supporters and donors using Twitter. While its up-and-down history and sometimes hostile environment can make it a challenging platform for building trust, Twitter’s fundamental attributes of short messages, a chronologically ordered feed, hashtags, and @ make it the best social media platform for libraries to solidify their relationships with individual donors and potential donors. Libraries can take advantage of these fundamental attributes to create brief fundraising messages, launch a fundraising campaign, and communicate directly with donors via mentions and replies in order to spread their fundraising efforts across the social network to reach wider audiences.
