Abstract

AbstractThis study presents a new methodology to design the patterned circular polarizer comprising a linear polarizer, a patterned retarder and a biaxial film for stereoscopic 3D LCDs. Based on the existing biaxial compensation technique, the patterned polarizer with biaxial compensation rather than conventional ±λ/4 patterned polarizer can enhance wide‐view performance by using the same patterned alignment technique. Compared to the conventional ±λ/4 patterned polarizer compensated by positive C film, the maximum crosstalk ratio of the optimal structure reduced from 0.025 to 0.018 at ±60° viewing cone for light normally passes through the glasses, and from 0.09 to 0.065 at ±60° viewing cone for light obliquely passes through the glasses at the angle the same as the one passing through LCD.
