Abstract

AbstractThe paper describes applications of Optiva thin‐crystal film (TCF) coatings to enhance the contrast and viewing angle performance of many types of LCDs. These new nano‐film polarizers are based on supramolecular lyotropic liquid crystalline materials that can be deposited (printed) on virtually any substrate. The coating dries, crystallizes and exhibits the property of an E‐type polarizer, because it transmits the extraordinary wave of light. The additional thin (∼320nm) TCF coating on the front O‐polarizer of TN LCD shows the following performance changes with respect to the baseline configuration without TCF: considerable increase in contrast ratio out to about 30° and a small drop in luminance that becomes more substantial at large angles.
