Abstract
In chronic diseases such as Neuromuscular diseases (NMD) disability is the most appropriate aspect of disease to measure. ACTIVLIM was developed for NMD patients to assess activity limitations in terms of difficulties in performing daily activities. It is a set of 22 self-administered questions. The aim of our study was to adapt the Activlim questionnaire for use in Turkey. The process of cultural adaptation of ACTIVLIM scale into Turkish society was complemented by following the guideline provided by Beaton et al and Ruberto et al. 93 child (14 female, 79 male) and 74 adult (38 female, 36 male) NMD patients included to the study. The mean age of children’s was 9.80 ± 2.9 and adults were 39.6 ± 16.9 year. Activlim, Functional independency measurement and Brooke Scale assessments were applied to the patients. Starting with 22 items, one item (ACTIVLIM 5 – Sitting on the toilet) displayed disordered thresholds, necessitating collapsing of categories. Following this, all items were found to fit the model (given a Bonferroni adjustment fit level of 0.002) (Table 1). Overall mean item fit residual was −0.285 (SD 1.142) and mean person fit residual was − 0.365 (SD 0.907). Item-trait interaction was non-significant, supporting the invariance of items (chi-square 30.2 (df = 22), p = 0.114). The PSI was good (0.95) indicating the ability of the scale to differentiate between 4 groups of patients. When the test-retest was examined via DIF by time, none of the items showed DIF. Evaluating activity limitations thoroughly and objectively and, considering the factors causing disability is necessary for planning the therapy approaches and demonstrating the effectiveness of the treatment programs.The results of our study showed that Activlim questionnaire is a valid and reliable measure of activity limitation for use with NMD patients in Turkey.
