Abstract

Intravenous Buprenorphine misuse is a serious and growing phenomenon in Tunisia. There is a strong relationship between this addiction and sexual dysfunctions. The aim of our study was to determine the prevalence of erectile dysfunction among a sample of Tunisian male injecting drug users. We conducted a cross sectional study including 52 male patients using intravenous Buprenorphine, in an outpatient addiction treatment unit in Tunis. We investigated sexual dysfunction with the international index of erectile function (IIEF15). The average score on the IIEF-15 was 36,65 ± 20,87 and extremes ranging from 3 to 73. It was negatively correlated with age (p = 0,019), the presence of organic (p = 0,023) and psychiatric comorbidities (p = 0,038), the duration of addiction (p = 0,011), and the amount of Buprenorphine consumed (p = 0,049). The average erectile Function score (EF) was 15,63 ± 9,26 which corresponds to a slight to moderate erectile dysfunction. Thirty one percent of the patients had severe dysfunction. The IIEF15-EF score was negatively correlated with age (p = 0,008), medical history (p = 0,012), especially the presence of sexually transmitted infections (p = 0,053), psychiatric comorbidities (p = 0,019), duration of the addiction (p = 0,009), and the amount of Buprenorphine consumed (p = 0.045).
