Abstract
ABSTRACT Introduction MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play critical roles in cell differentiation, proliferation, and apoptosis; and inappropriate expression of specific miRNA contributes to development of tumors. Methods We examined the expression of miRNAs 143, 145, 7 and 34a in 121 tumor samples from the patients with colorectal cancer and 113 adenoma compared with those in normal samples. Results The expression levels of miR-143, -145 and -34a were decreased in colon cancers and adenomas. The expression level of miR-7 was increased in advanced colon cancers. The expression levels of miR-34a were down-regulated in the colorectal adenomas and early cancers samples of exophytic type than flat elevated type. Conclusion These findings suggest that miRNAs-143, -145, -7 and 34a could be good tumor markers and provide an important clue to the study of the mechanism of oncogenesis in colon tumors.
