Abstract

ABSTRACT Introduction The QOL & survival rate for colorectal ca patients depends on relationship between the medical social worker [MSW]/Nurse and Rehabilitation care team, providing continuity of care and a smooth transition from diagnosis to death. It is essential that a good collaborative relationship exists between the Colorectal Nurse and Rehabilitation care team. To determine qualities relationship between a nurse/MSW and a Hospital-based Rehabilitation care team. To assess rehabilitation needs of colorectal ca patients. To forward these recommendations to NGO clinics &cancer care institutes. The effort was to overall increase in quality of life in rural areas. Our cancer NGO evaluated roles of MSW & cancer nurse within a multidisciplinary team. Devise methodologies by which their services can be integrated together. In phase II of project it was decided to rationalize their training module & to see how MSW/nurse and Rehabilitation care team work together to enable support for patients and families. Maximum stress was to improve communication channels between cancer care multidisciplinary team and community workers. Methods A retrospective analysis colorectal cancer data base from cancer care centers registry was taken as reference: We evaluated how many patients referred to colorectal cancer team from April 2007 till Nov 2011. How many patients diagnosed of colorectal cancer, and how many patients were referred to Rehabilitation care team. On rationalized protocol, case study proforma devised to study nature of the colorectal nurse/ Rehabilitation care team relationship. Results The Colorectal Cancer team saw 84 patients. A total of 22 patients referred to the Rehabilitation care team in metro. 17 patients died during course of study. 6 abruptly dropped out due to financial crunch for chemo/radio-therapy. 90% patients/families stressed need for more rehabilitation efforts. Conclusion Colorectal cancer incidence very high, relationship between MSW/nurse and Rehabilitation care team is crucial for survival period & Quality of QOL. This close relationship provides support for specified module for training of MSW/Nurse and continuous care for both patient and their families. Our NGO project outlines need for developing collaborative working relationship between MSW/Nurse and hospital-based Rehabilitation care team. Resource limitations & lack of expertise in rural area of India limited our project duration. But we suggest collaborative studies on this fertile topic of Rehabilitation care research in developing nations of the southern countries. 14th WCGIC & ESMO congress must take up such issues in panel discussions.
