Abstract
Background: Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), a rate-limiting enzyme in heme catabolism, is known to play a role in the protection of cells against oxidative stress, inflammation, and influences tumor growth and metastasis. Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the most common cancers and a major cause of cancer-related death worldwide. As yet, the role and mechanism of HO-1 in gastric cancer development and metastasis remains unclear. Sonic hedgehog signaling pathway is very related to tumor growth, apoptosis and invasion.
