Abstract

The effect of the percentage of egg development on production is analyzed in relation to the corresponding larval growth and setting in the operation of a commercial oyster hatchery. During the production period, the percentage of eggs developing into straight-hinge larvae decreased each month. However, the larvae showed no negative effects in time of growth or setting. Larvae from eggs with only 20% straight-hinge development did as well as larvae from eggs with 100% development. The percentage of egg development to straight hinge is not an indication of the success of the larval population during growth or setting.
