Abstract

Recent geological studies in north-western Sudan, as well as archival studies, clarify the locations of water-bearing depressions in this remote hyperarid desert that were once conjectured to be lost oases. Oyo, located 35 kilometres north-west of Merga (Nukheila) oasis was reported upon in a wartime report but not until now in scientific geographical literature. Several of these depressions contain late Quaternary lake beds that are providing a new understanding of the geochronology and paleoecology of past pluvial climates and prehistoric occupations of the eastern Sahara.
