Abstract

TREATMENT In each case treatment with a moxidectin1 wormer was given at first presentation with no clinically detectable effect after seven days. A more rigorous treatment protocol was therefore established. 1. Oral ivermectin3 wormer at triple the recommended dose (i.e. 600 micrograms per kg) followed one week later by a 5 day course of fenbendazole4 at the normal dose rate. 2. Once daily application of an extemporaneous mixture of 25 ml ivermectin5, 225 ml propylene glycol mixture to the perineum until one week after resolution of signs. 3. Hygiene: daily grooming starting at the head and progressing to the hind end before discarding the brush for thorough cleaning/disinfection; removing the bed from the stable and power hosing the floor and walls before putting in fresh bedding; routine faecal collection from the paddocks.
