Abstract

Chemical investigation of the whole body of three lycaenid butterflies Lycaeides argyrognomon praeterinsularis (males and females), Lycaeides subsolanus yaginus (males) and Plebejus argus micrargus (males) resulted in the identification of viridiflorol (1), (E)-β-farnesene epoxide (2) and δ-cadinol (3) as characteristic components of L. argyrognomon praeterinsularis males. Compounds 1–2 were discovered for the first time in insects. Compound 3 has also been reported from males of the Swedish subspecies of Lycaeides argyrognomon, suggesting that it may be useful as a chemotaxonomic marker of this species.
