Abstract

1.1. Oxygen uptake by Musca domestica microsomes was examined. The effects of NADPh, NADH††The following abbreviations and common names are used throughout: NADPH for reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate; NADH for reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide; CO for carbon monoxide; SKF-525-A for β-diethylaminoethyldiphenylpropylacetate; Sulfoxide for 1,2-(methylenedioxy)-4[2-(octylsulfinyl)propyl] benzene. and enzyme concentrations were determined. The rate of oxygen uptake is dependent on nucleotide and enzyme concentration.2.2. The effects of the mixed function oxidase inhibitors, sulfoxide and SKF-525-A, as well as p-chloromercuriphenylsulfonate and p-nitroanisole were measured. p-Chloromercuriphenylsulfonate inhibited oxygen uptake while the other compounds had little effect.3.3. The optimum pH for oxygen uptake and NADPH oxidation are similar as are the rates of NADPH oxidation and oxygen uptake.
