Abstract

Breathing pure oxygen at one atmosphere leads to primary destruction of alveolar capillary endothelial cells; squamous epithelial cells are damaged secondarily, whereas granular pneumocytes are found to regenerate a cuboidal epithelium lining and air spaces. Interstitial and alveolar edema ensue as a consequence of permeability changes in the cell layers. The role of hematological changes in the development of pulmonary oxygen toxicity is discussed.
