Abstract

Whole blood oxygen affinity is reduced in adult and fetal baboons as compared to the oxygen dissociation properties of human blood. The oxygen tension required for half saturation of blood at pH 7.4 is 30.6 mm Hg for the adult and 24.7 mm Hg for the fetus. Oxygen saturations were determined by a modified mixing technique (Edwards and Martin, 1966) and these values are compared to those obtained by gas chromatography.
