Abstract

1. 1. The relation between oxygen consumption and body weight were studied in unfed, starved specimens of Mytilus edulis under conditions of constant degree of valve opening, constant artificial ventilation of the mantle cavity, and declining oxygen tension. 2. 2. Expressed by a power function Y = a W b (where Y = oxygen uptake rate, W = body weight), it was found that V max = 421.6 W 0.87 μ10 2/ hr, and K m = 20.1 W 0.44 mmHg (where V max is the apparent maximum oxygen consumption rate, and K m the oxygen concentration at which the rate is half maximal). 3. 3. The “oxygen-dependence” index ( K m ) related to tissue dry weight shows that oxygen-dependence increases with increased body weight and V max . 4. 4. The K m -value is discussed in terms of the mean oxygen translocation distance of the tissues.
