Abstract
1. 1. The cutaneous and gill oxygen uptake of the ampullariid snail Marisa cornuarietis has been measured polarographically in relation to different ambient oxygen tensions. 2. 2. The oxygen uptake is largely oxygen dependent with a weak regulatory ability down to a pO 2 of 90 mm Hg. 3. 3. The mean rate of oxygen uptake of a 100-mg (dry weight) specimen is 1.2 μl O 2/mg per hr at 25°C. The estimating equation relating oxygen consumption rate to dry body weight is: log QO 2 = − 0.4120 log dry wt. + 0.9167. 4. 4. The extraction efficiency of oxygen is significantly different between large and small specimens and increases with decreasing oxygen tension.
