Abstract

Correlates of the rate of oxygen consumption (Vo 2 ) were studied in infants with congenital heart disease. In 30 sets of observations Vo 2 per kilogram had a significant (p 2 per kilogram with increasing congestive heart failure (p=0.02) or decreasing relative weight (p=0.03). The relationship of caloric intake to Vo 2 per kilogram in these patients may be a causal one, while the correlation of degree of failure with Vo 2 per kilogram may be largely attributable to the decline in relative weight associated with increasing failure.
