Abstract
1. 1. Hematological data were measured in growing chickens from the sixth day of incubation until 7 months after hatch. 2. 2. Blood cell oxygen consumption, M ̇ O 2 was studied as a function of body mass. 3. 3. During embryonic life, blood M ̇ O 2 decreased in two allometric phases, the rate of decrease being greater during the last week of incubation. 4. 4. After hatch, M ̇ O 2 increased during the first week, then decreased allometrically until adult values were reached.
