Abstract

We shall review some results from several areas of oxide science in which neutron scattering and X-ray synchrotron scattering exercise a complement- ary role to high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The very high- resolution time-of-flight neutron diffraction technique and its role in studies of the magnetic structure of oxides will especially be reviewed. The selected topics of structural studies for the chosen oxides are: crystal and magnetic structure of the so-called cellular random systems, magnetic structure and phase transitions in ferrites and the behaviour of water in non-stoichiom etric protonic conductors and in the opal silica-water system.
