Abstract

A better understanding of the reference range and the variability of minerals’, thyroid hormones and TSH concentrations in canines can provide useful information on the health status of individuals. The aim of this study is to identify the reference ranges of TT3,TT4, TSH, Iodine and minerals in serum of healthy dogs. The main objectives were the development of a straightforward method for ICP-OES determination of total iodine in canine serum and the calculation of reference ranges, standard deviations and percentage coefficient of variation for TT3, TT4, TSH, Al, Ca, Cr, Cu, Fe, I, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Zn. Blood serum samples from 93 healthy dogs from the Muscel region (Romania) were collected. Essential minerals and iodine were quantitated by comparison with external calibration solutions by ICP- OES. The iodine determination followed the method described by Schramel and Hasse (1994). The serum hormones TT3, TT4, TSH were also measured.  For TT3 concentration the reference range is 59.44 ng/dl -134.276 ng/dl, for the TSH concentration the reference range is 0.165 ng/dl-0.445 ng/dl and for  TT4 concentration  0.85(mg/dl) -2.4(mg/dl). The Iodine referenced range is 0.452 x10 -3 ppm - 9.02 x10 -3 ppm.
