Abstract

The compound Cp*Os(CO)(PMe 2Ph)Me (Cp* = η 5-C 5Me 5) (II) reacts with bromine and mercury(II) bromide to give Cp*Os(CO)(PMe 2Ph)Br (III) and either methyl bromide or methylmercuric bromide, respectively. The compounds [Cp*Os(CO)(PMe 2Ph)(Me)Br]Br (IV) and [Cp*Os(CO)(PMe 2Ph)(Me)(HgBr)]Br (V), both formally complexes of osmium(IV), are isolable intermediates in the electrophilic cleavage reactions.
