Abstract
An exploratory study has been initiated on W–Nb alloy for elevated temperature application. The alloy was prepared by mechanical alloying followed by sintering at 2063K. This is followed by a detailed characterization of microstructure and oxidation resistance properties. Generally, a two phase microstructure comprising W–rich and Nb-rich solid solutions was observed especially in alloys containing higher Nb. Preliminary oxidation study indicated that W–Nb alloy possessed relatively better oxidation resistance as compared to pure W or Nb which may be attributed to the presence of impervious and tenacious complex W–Nb oxides.
