Abstract

1. The course of the oxidative titration of the reduced form of polyarylenequinones was investigated. The occurrence of this process is related to the structure of the investigated polymers. The oxidative process probably includes a stage of formation of the semiquinone form. 2. Sulfonic acid-substituted polyarylenequinones possess increased normal potentials in comparison with p-benzoquinone. 3. The electron exchange capacity of the polyarylenequinones was measured. In all cases it was lower than the theoretical values; this difference decreased from swollen sulfonic acid-substituted polymers to polymers without sulfonic acid groups. 4. Variation of the ratio of the initial reagents (p-benzoquinone and diamine) does not lead to any appreciable change in the ion exchange capacity of polyarylenequinones.
