Abstract

In order to study the reactivity of ferrocenes toward radicals their inhibitory effect on the autoxidation of cumene was investigated. Results show that ferrocene has a considerable effect in acidic solvents (Fig. 3), but no effect in neutral solvents such as chlorobenzene (Fig. 2). Further, in order to study a substituent effect on the oxidation reaction of ferrocenes some mono-substituted derivatives were synthesized. It was observed that an electron-abstracting substituent lowered the rate of oxygen absorption in the following order; R=CH3>C2H5>H>CHO>COCH3>C(CH3)=CH3 (Table 3). From these results the rate of oxygen absorption of ferrocenes in acidic solvents was found to be affected by the electron density around the central metal.
