Abstract

The reaction kinetics of water oxidation by Ru(bpy) 3 3+ in the presence of Co(III) and Fe(III) colloidal hydroxides are studied as a function of pH, catalyst concentration and simple and complex salt additives. It was found that the kinetics of O 2 formation and that of oxidant consumption differ due to side oxidation reactions. A reaction mechanism taking into account the ion exchange properties of the catalyst surface hydroxo groups and suggesting dioxygen formation on two neighbouring catalytically active centres is proposed.
