Abstract
A Serratia marcescens strain quantitatively converted vanillin (0·1%, w/v) to vanillic acid, which exerted an inhibitory effect on bacterial growth. Vanillic acid producing activity was found in cell-free extracts of cultures grown in media with and without vanillin, when glucose was the substrate.
