Abstract

The complexes, trans-Pt(NH 3) 4 Br 2 2+ and trans-Pt(NH 3) 4Cl 2 2+ have been electrochemically reduced to Pt(NH 3) 4 2+ at a platinum electrode. The electrochemical oxidation of Pt(NH 3) 4 2+ at a platinum electrode in aqueous bromide and chloride solutions produced trans-Pt(NH 3) 4Br 2 2+ and trans-Pt(NH 3) 4Cl 2 2+, respectively. Electrochemical oxidation of Pt(NH 3) 4 2+ did not occur in perchlorate, nitrate or fluoride solutions. A mechanism for the electrochemical oxidation has been suggested which is similar to that proposed, for the homogeneous oxidation of Pt(NH 3) 4 2+ by haloplatinum(IV) complexes.
