Abstract
Kinetic deuterium isotope effects for the oxidation of diphenylphosphine oxide and of two substituted diphenylphosphine oxides by peroxybenzoic acid were determined by measuring reaction rates in acidic and alkaline dioxan-H 2O and dioxan-D 2O solutions. Reactants were shown to exchange readily their acidic protons with deuterium in dioxan-D 2O. Kinetic isotope effects data are interpreted on the basis of a two-step oxidation mechanism involving preliminary formation of a reactive peroxide intermediate and subsequent decomposition to give the observed reaction products.
