Abstract

Oxidation of Chevrel pahse Cu 2Mo 6S 7.75 was studied by using TG and DTA methods at temperature below 650°C in air. The DTA curve of Cu 2Mo 6S 7.75 in air at 10°C/min showed 4 exothermic peaks; a minor 1st peak (290°C), a very sharp 2nd peak (394°C), and overlapping 3rd peak (450°C) and a broad 4th peak (529°C) with corresponding weight change steps in the TG curve. The X-ray diffraction of the sample were taken at the end of each heating cycle. It was evident from this and wet chemical analysis that the oxidation proceeds through the following steps: (i) incorporation of oxygen into the sample and change of lattice parameter, (2) preferential oxidation of the sample to MoO 3 (orthorhombic), (3) formation of CuSO 4 and (4) final oxidation to CuMoO 4 and MoO 3 (ortho).
