Abstract

1. 1. The oxidation of butyrate to ketone bodies and CO 2 was studied in tissues (rumen epithelium, liver, kidney, heart and lung) of camel ( Camelus dromedarius), sheep ( Ovis aries) and goat ( Carpa hircus). 2. 2. The rumen epithelium and the liver of the goat and the sheep oxidized considerable quantities of butyrate to ketone bodies and CO 2; whereas, in camel both tissues converted negligible amounts. 3. 3. The kidney of the camel metabolized more butyrate than that of the sheep or the goat. 4. 4. In all species studied, the heart and the lung oxidized very little butyrate.
