Abstract

1. π-Allylpalladium chloride in aqueous hydrochloric acid solution is oxidized by p-benzoquinone. The products are hydroquinone, sodium tetrachloropalladoate, and allyl chloride. 2. At high chloride ion concentrations (3.7 g-ion/liter) 1 mole of p-benzoquinone is consumed in the oxidation of a single allyl grouping (C3H5PdCl), while at low chloride ion concentrations, 2 moles of oxidant are consumed. 3. The kinetics of oxidation of -π-allylpalladium chloride by p-benzoquinone at high chloride ion concentration were investigated potentiometrically. The reaction was second order, first order in complex, and first order in oxidant.
