Abstract

The surface of TNBV5 alloys was treated using fluorine based polymer which improves the oxidation resistance of titanium aluminides. This work shows that the controlled fluorination of a TiAl alloy surface improves the oxidation resistance even in the presence of 0.1 v/o SO2 in the environment. Contrary to thermodynamic predictions no sulfides were found in the oxide scale. Diffusion of oxygen and nitrogen into the alloy during oxidation seems to be reduced in the presence of sulfur dioxide.
