Abstract I should like to thank Joan Tumblety, Tony Kushner (whose work on old Eastleigh continues to be a source of inspiration), David Cesarani, Jo Reilly, Kendrick Oliver, Edgar Feuchtwanger, Rodney Livingstone, Alan Bance, Tim Reuter, and many other colleagues in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Southampton, not only for their various suggestions for this volume, but also for providing such a stimulating environment for thinking about the history and memory of European fascism; thanks are also due to Jeremy Noakes, both for his many suggestions and comments on this volume, and for his continued support and encouragement.
