Abstract

As has been the custom for the last 12 years, some 30 students, about half from the UK and the other half from as far away as Taiwan, attended the tenday school in Oxford organized by Terry Willis and Colin Carlile. This school is characterized by a series of elementary lectures actually at a fundamental level rather than a research seminar level, and nine hours of tutorials. The latter were used for a series of exercises, questions, and short presentations by the students on their own work. The four theory lectures were given by Andrew Boothroyd (Oxford University) and a set of lectures on sources, instruments and optical components was given by Colin Carlile (ILL). Although many of the lecturers came from ISIS (just 20 krn from Oxford) those from more distant destinations included A. Albinati (U. of Milan), 0. Byron (Univ. of Glasgow), B. Gabrys (Brunel University, UK), and G. Lander (Karlsruhe). There was also an afternoon trip to visit ISIS and see the busy experimental floor.
