Abstract

Fruit mesocarp of 60 species of palms were analyzed for total oxalate content. All species contained some oxalate, but concentrations varied widely among the seven palm tribes studied. Fruit oxalate concentrations were consistently low in the Phoeniceae, Borasseae, Lepidocaryeae and Cocoeae, high in the Hyophorbeae, Caryoteae and Cyclospatheae, and variable in the Areceae.
