Owen Wister’s 1902 novel, The Virginian, carved an immense swath through American popular culture. His portrait of the strong but gentle cowboy (known only as “the Virginian”) served as a prototype for western heroes that dominated film, novels, stories, and radio and television series for more than a half-century. Wister (1860–1938) was an effete easterner, a Harvard graduate whose disappointments in a budding musical career and early literary efforts led to a nervous breakdown.
