Abstract

After indicting the major requirements of the Next Step Machine (ITER) in this paper, an overview is given of the tritium technology development for fusion in Europe. The obtained results mainly concern the realization of new tritium Laboratories (the JET Active Gas Handling System, the Tritium Laboratory Karlsruhe and the European Tritium Handling Experimental Laboratory), the developments from the JET Tritium Technology Program (mainly process components) and the developments from the NET Tritium Technology Program in various areas (tritiated gas pumping, plasma exhaust gas clean-up, tritium storage, tritium recovery from tritiated water, hydrogen isotope separation, decontamination of atmospheres, tests of materials and reprocessing of tritiated wastes). Then the main features of the future program are indicated.
