Abstract
The Brazilian book market has undergone an unprecedented crisis since 2015 which reached its most dramatic moment at the end of 2018 when the two main bookstore chains, Cultura and Saraiva, filed for bankruptcy in the Rio de Janeiro courts. Cultura and Saraiva jointly represent around 40% of general book sales (fiction and non-fiction) in Brazil. Why Brazilian book industry has disappointed those who had predicted a brilliant future in the earliest 2000 decade? This study gives an overall analysis of the reasons why the industry almost collapsed and shares thoughts and challenges for the future of The Brazilian Book Industry.
