Abstract

Nonlinear acoustic applications for material characterization and NDE are reviewed. Acoustic nonlinear parameters of solids are introduced and major experimental methods for their determination are also considered. The investigations of nonlinear acoustic applications for solid material NDE are discussed for different levels of disruption, from asymmetry of lattice structure and dislocation in crystals to unbonds and cracks in engineering materials. Special attention is paid to the contact acoustic nonlinearity, which is responsible for abnormally high elastic nonlinearity of materials containing fractured defects.
