Abstract

Nuclear regulation is in general a national responsibility. However, the accidents at Three-Mile Island, Chernobyl, and Fukushima have reinforced the benefits of improved coordination of international policy regarding regulation of facilities. This chapter provides an international perspective about nuclear safety regulation and regulatory frameworks, focusing on commercial nuclear power facility applications. The objectives, requirements, scope, roles, functions, and attributes of an effective regulatory body are highlighted along with key concepts associated with effective regulation of nuclear installations. Various approaches adopted by Regulatory Bodies are described, and future considerations associated with nuclear facility installation regulation are highlighted.
