Abstract
This paper provides an overview of the efforts of NATO Science and Technology Organization Task Group AVT-282, Unsteady Aerodynamic Response of Rigid Wings in Gust Encounters. This group was formed to coordinate international efforts to extend the state of the art in our understanding of unsteady aerodynamics, specifically those of large-amplitude gust encounters. Results and contributions of the group include identification and characterization of flight-relevant aerodynamically severe gusts; a large dataset of force responses and flowfields for wings in transverse, vortex, and streamwise gust encounters; detailed descriptions and a fundamental understanding of the mechanisms of force production in large-amplitude gust encounters; and guidelines as to when and how analytical models can be used to predict the lift response of a large-amplitude wing-gust encounter.
