Most research institutes and laboratories engaged in studies of the service life of building materials follow some established procedure when performing the investigations. There are also examples of systematic approaches proposed by international organizations and some methodologies are established as national standards. The paper presents an overview of some proposed or used methodologies for approaching research on the service life of building materials and components. A joint committee of the international organizations CIB and RILEM is preparing a generic methodology which is meant to meet the need of the two organizations in their research on service life prediction. This work is also accounted for and the article ends with a review of some of the general research needs in connection with the prediction of service life.
